Volunteering With Us
- Ulu Mumu: We are a permaculture farm and family homestead with young children. We have been tending to this land since 2019 and have been trying to make her healthy and beautiful. Animals on the farm: goats, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, humans. We harvest rainwater and use a compost toilet. Other than permaculture, we draw inspiration from natural farming, syntropic agroforestry, and regenerative agriculture. We are trying to root ourselves to the land and rely less on the global industrial system for our needs.
Need help with anything related to farm life, including gardening, building, cooking, and child care. We have three homeschooled children (aged 3,6, and 9) and welcome single or family volunteers.

Ulu Mumu is an exploration and experiment on what it is to be in a relationship with land. A relationship between steward and home, not owner and property. A relationship based on care, harmony, and gratitude. It is a gentle rebellion against the zeitgeist of our time.
We have been tending to our 5 acre homestead since 2019. She gives us air, sunshine, food, water, physical and mental exertion, and spiritual growth; in return we devote ourselves to her health and beauty. We grow food, raise animals (humans included), plant flowers, heal the soil, harvest rainwater, pee on trees, compost our poop, and remind ourselves to have fun while doing it all.
The name of our homestead is made up of two words. Ulu (pronounced “ooh-loo“) is a Malay term used to denote the wildness and remoteness of a place, with negative connotations of backwardness. It literally means the upstream source of a river, situated deeper in the wilder mountains as compared to the flatter, more populated and more developed lowlands. The word ulu resonated with us because our journey has been one where we trudge against the flow of civilized society, back to a deeper and wilder source of our being. Mumu was the name that we told our then two year old toddler of our new home back in 2019 simply because there were over a hundred mooing cows grazing the land everyday.
At its deepest, Ulu Mumu is a quest to discover what it means for us to be of and belong to this earth.
